This site makes extensive use of CSS to control its layout and formatting. To see it as it is intended, you need a browser that implements level 2 CSS correctly. Most recent browsers do so; check the compatibility chart below for details of those we know about. If you disable CSS, or use a browser that doesn't support it, you should still be able to read and navigate the site, but it may not look very neat. We have avoided the use of JavaScript. You will need the Flash and QuickTime plug-ins to see some of the examples. Sites that you reach by following our links may have their own requirements.

We have done our best, with the resources and tools available to us, to observe the WAI guidelines, and the site should transform gracefully. However, we are not in a position to test exhaustively, so we would be grateful if readers who are using assistive technology or unconventional browsers let us know of any problems they encounter.
The table below summarizes the site's compatibility with those browsers we have been able to test. If you are using a browser or system that is not included here, and are willing to check the site for any problems, we would be glad to hear the result: please use the feedback form to send us the details.
| OS | Browser | Version | Remarks |

| MacOS X | Safari | 1.0 | OK |
| Internet Explorer | 5.2 | Slight layout glitches on ToC pages | |
| Camino | 0.7 | Very minor problems with ToC rollovers at small font sizes | |
| Links | 0.95 | Text-only. Site is readable and navigable | |
| MacOS Classic | Internet Explorer | 5.1 | Slight layout glitches on ToC pages. |
| Netscape | 4.7 | Complete layout disaster. Turn off CSS if you must use this browser | |
| Windows XP | Internet Explorer | 6 | OK |

Note: Camino and Mozilla both use the Gecko rendering engine, and so they should be typical of all browsers based on this engine (including Netscape) on their respective platforms.
